Undergraduate Studies



The Department is widely known in Greece for its demanding, innovating and well organised curriculum. It is the only one to offer to its students a free choice among dozens of courses offered each semester. The only constraint to free choice is the obligation to accumulate a certain number of credits in every field. Two different kinds of courses are offered: 1. lectures that are usually controlled by final exams and 2. seminars, open mainly to advanced students, in which each student must orally present and, later, submit a paper on a specific subject. Each semester, students usually take 6 courses which are equivalent to 30 ECTS credits. For the acquisition of the department�s (of History and Archaeology) degree students have to succesfully complete a study programme of 52 semester courses in one of the following three fields:

1. Ancient and Medieval History (Degree Program A1)
2. Modern and Contemporary History (Degree Program A2)
3. Archaeology (Degree Program B)

3 4 introductory semester courses in Greek and European History are given and, while they are optional, are strongly recommended to beginers. 4 These courses are offered by the department of Philosophican and Social Studies and by the department of Sociology 5 These courses are offered by the department of Philology; 2 courses minimum should be on Modern Greek Philology) 6 Out of the 6 seminars 1 must be in Ancient History or Byzantine History or Medieval History, 4 in Contemporary/ Modern History and the 6th can be a free choice from the History seminars Degree Program B : Archaeology

Postgraduate studies

The deparment offers two postgraduate degrees : a) A 1st postgraduate degree
b) A doctoral degree

Postgraduate studies are offered in the following subject areas:
1. Modern-contemporary history
2. Classical Archaeology
3. History of art
4. Turkology (with the cooperation of the Mediterranean Institut)


All graduates from the Faculties of the Human and Social sciences of any Greek or foreign equivalent universitiy can apply for admission to the postgraduate program of the 1st circle. Candidates in the first postgraduate degree are selected on the basis of written and oral examinations and interview. An obligatory prerequesitive for admission is the good knowledge of a foreign language and a pass grade o 65 credits out of 85 during the exams. Admission exams are held each year during the last 10 days of February and / or September. The call of interest and details about the entry exams are announced by the beginning of December for the spring semester and by the beginning of May for the winter semester which are the deadline for the canditate�s applications.

7 These courses are offered by the department of Philology; 2 courses minimum should be on Modern Greek Philology) In order to get their first post graduate degree students have to sucesfully complete a) a minimum of four seminars, b) a seminar thesis or colloquium The duration of the first postgraduate circle lasts for 4 - 6 semesters but can be lengthened by decision of the General Assembly of the Department . The succesful completion of the 1st circle of studies leads to the first postgraduate degree which aims at the specialisation in one of the suject areas offered by the Department.

The second circle of postgraduate studies aims to educate scientific-researchers and leads to the award of a doctoral degree. The 1st postgraduate degree is a prerequisitive for students to be canditats for the doctoral degree program.

The student with the agreement of one faculty members of the department proposes the subject of the Thesis to the general assemble. The G.A. appoints the supervisor and two other members of the faculty specialized in the field to help and supervise the student. When the thesis is completed the doctorate is defended before the Examing Comitee and the General Assembly of the Department. The Thesis must have been completed within 6 semester of studies.
